Encouraging family/friends to be better role models
Who are your role models? What is it about them that made you look up to them and want to be like them?
Chances are it wasn’t their preaching that did it. In fact, that would be a turn off. More likely, it was the fact that they liked you; they made you feel important or good and had some qualities you admired.
So, when it comes to your family and friends being better role models for your children, keep in mind that parents are far more influential. It may not always feel like it, but they do care what you think and your influence is extremely powerful. In fact, research shows that peer influence only really comes into play once the parent/child relationship has broken down. Don’t underestimate your own power!
Of course, you would prefer to have your family and close friends be positive role models as well. Communicating how you feel is most probably the key to getting the ball rolling in this area.
